Special Educational Needs

 

Children are identified as having special educational needs if they have a learning or emotional/behavioural difficulty that calls for special provision to be made for them.

Children have learning difficulty if they:

• Have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age
• Have a disability that prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for children of the same age in schools within the area of the local education authority

The school's Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) is Miss C Dowell (Deputy Head Teacher).

Co-Production

At Grove School, we value the strong partnerships we build with parents and carers and recognise the vital role they play in supporting their child's learning, wellbeing and development.

Each term, we hold SEND Parent Workshops, providing opportunities for parents and carers to meet with their child's class teacher to review progress and discuss their child's individual targets. During these meetings, parents and teachers work together to review current targets, celebrate achievements and agree on next steps. Parents and carers are also encouraged to identify and set a target that can be supported at home, helping to ensure a consistent and collaborative approach between home and school.

These workshops enable families to gain a deeper understanding of their child's needs, explore the support in place and learn practical strategies that can be used at home to further support learning and development.

We also invite a range of external agency professionals to attend these workshops, giving parents and carers the opportunity to speak directly with specialists involved in supporting children with SEND. This strengthens communication between home, school and external services, ensuring that children receive the most effective and coordinated support possible.

Through these workshops and our ongoing communication, we aim to create a collaborative partnership in which parents, carers, school staff and professionals work together to help every child thrive, make progress and achieve their full potential.

EasyPeasy has partnered with the Department for Education and Speech and Language UK to give families in Birmingham the skills and tools they need to support children’s speech, language and communication development as part of the Talk and Play Project.

SENDIASS

Should you wish to seek independent advice regarding special educational needs or disabilities, the Special Education Needs and Disability Information Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) exists to provide free impartial information, advice and support to parents of pupils with special educational needs or disabilities in Birmingham.

This service is also designed to help you understand the law and procedures that affect you and your child with special educational needs or disabilities.
